Both hospitals are major centres for Paediatric care in Scotland, and are closely associated with the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Both hospitals provide a wide range of general, community and specialist services for children including critical care. Both hospitals are co-located with the major teaching hospitals for adults in Scotland, at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Both have onsite maternity and neonatal units. Both have extensive modern laboratory services including Metabolic Biochemistry and Clinical and Molecular Genetics. In addition, the Scottish Inherited Metabolic Disorders Service provides direct care for children and adults throughout Scotland through outreach clinics supplemented with virtual consultations and telephone advice to families and to health, education and social care professionals.
