Applications are invited for two substantive Consultant Anaesthetist posts in Aberdeen.  This is an opportunity to be part of a growing team of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists based at Royal Aberdeen Children Hospital.  A business case to expand the children’s theatre service, in line with clinical demand is being submitted.  Both advertised posts are whole time equivalent replacement posts with 8 Direct Clinical Care programmed activities and 2 Supporting Programmed Activities. Both posts will contribute to the Paediatric Anaesthesia on-call out of hours’ with an on-call frequency of 1 in 6.5 with prospective cover.  

Post 1 consists of a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist post with dedicated Paediatric sessions.

Post 2 consists of a Consultant Anaesthetist post with a special interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia. This post offers sessions in both adult and paediatric practice, suitable for those wishing to maintain skills in both areas. 

Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital is a tertiary Paediatric Hospital and Paediatric Major Trauma Centre providing high quality, acute and comprehensive care for children up to the age of 16 years from the Grampian region in the North-East of Scotland, as well as from the Orkney and Shetland Islands. It is the regional Paediatric Oncology provider and additional clinical networks enable children from other parts of Scotland to receive their specialist care in Aberdeen. 

Aberdeen is an affluent, friendly and vibrant city, combining all the amenities of a large city with easy access to spectacular surrounding countryside.  This, along with a track record of excellent secondary and further education, makes it an attractive place in which to live and an ideal base for those with families. Aberdeen also offers easy links to other European cities and is only a one hour flight to London.

Aberdeen has a large Anaesthetic department which covers a comprehensive range of clinical services and caters for well-structured undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training programmes.  The department is also recognised for its expanding research activity and for its support for a wide range of local, regional and national professional activities. 

The medical school, a state of the art clinical skills centre, and several renowned research institutes and centres are also on site which offers a unique opportunity for collaboration and for the development of strong research and teaching interests. 

Applications from candidates wishing to work on part time basis will be considered.  It will also be possible to accommodate more flexible working arrangements including annualised job plans and job sharing.

Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made.  Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
