We are looking to recruit a full time, permanent Health Protection Nurse Consultant in the Public Health Department based at Kirklands NHSL Headquarters.
Hours of work: 9am to 5pm
JOB PURPOSE
- To provide strategic nurse consultant level leadership to an Public Health Programme (Test and Protect) or area of activity to make sure it effectively influences policies and actions to reduce the burden of ill health from this area on the population of Lanarkshire.
- To be a source of highly specialised professional health protection related advice and knowledge to a wide range of stakeholders
- To initiate and lead local research activities and provide education and training to other health protection staff and wider NMAHP colleagues through designated educational activities.
- To support NHSL Health Protection/Public Health Dept strategic developments by contributing towards the delivery of the appropriate health protection component of the Organisation’s overall remit.
- To discharge duties under the Public Health Act (Scotland) 2008 and act as Competent Person on the Public Health Consultant Out of Hours Rota.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
- Computer literacy, excellent working knowledge of commonly used software
- Highly developed analytical skills, including experience in the utilisation of statistical analysis tools
- Highly developed communication skills, both verbal and written, with experience in managing contentious issues, areas of conflict or differences in professional opinion
- Experience of training and delivery and development of educational programmes in complex subject areas, to a range of audiences
- Experience in the leadership and delivery of health protection projects or programmes in line with recognised methodologies
- Experience in Emergency Planning and Public Health Emergencies
- Experience Influencing Health Protection/Public Health strategy, policy and guidelines.
- Wide experience of all aspects of health protection including outbreaks, local surveillance and quality improvement
- Experience and a working Knowledge and of the Test and Protect Service
- Can make complex case management decisions based on information from patients, health care workers and other people to identify likely diagnosis/risk to public health.
- Able to Discharge duties under the Public Health Act (Scotland) 2008 and can act as ‘Competent Person’ to ensure public health protection e.g. impose exclusions and detainments.
- Practiced in writing policies
- Experienced at presenting

- Record of peer-reviewed publications
- Commitment to CPD requirements of NMC and aligning to NES and RCN nursing career competency frameworks
- Flexible approach and commitment to apply skills across NHSL HPT in support of clinical priorities
Qualifications & Training
- Registered general nurse (registration current with NMC.)
- Experience working at a senior level in the NHS in either; Health Protection/ Infection prevention and control/ Communicable Diseases.
- Primary degree in a scientific or clinical subject.
- Postgraduate qualification such as MSc in a relevant topic plus extensive experience in a healthcare or public health setting
- PhD or equivalent high level experience in public health or health protection
- Demonstrable experience utilising epidemiological research methods and applying in practice
- Facilitation of Health Protection/Public Health Education and training
- Recognised Infection Control Qualification (e.g. Diploma/Degree in Infection Control Nursing) Or Recognised Community Nursing Qualification (e.g. Diploma/degree in Health Visiting/Public Health Nursing) or equivalent post-graduate qualification
