The shift pattern for this post is 37.5 hours over 5 days – Monday to Friday.
The post holder works with the Technical Services Manager and Microbiology Service Manager to provide a Quality Management, Health & Safety and Environmental Compliance management role for the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Microbiology service. The post holder is responsible for overseeing the Quality Management system, to ensure the delivery of a service fit for purpose that represents the patients’ best interests and provides a highly specialised quality service in Microbiology.
The post holder will be responsible for the application of the compliance system for the Microbiology laboratories in NHS GG&C, specifically Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH). The post holder will closely examine activities and procedures within GG&C Microbiology Laboratories to ensure that all laboratories meet the high standards set by external accreditation body the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). This will include UKAS assessments related to the ISO 15189 medical standards for the clinical laboratories and ISO 17025 calibration and testing standards for the GRI Environmental Laboratory.
The knowledge, experience and training requirements for the position are as follows:
- State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is mandatory.
- Healthcare Science Masters’ Degree (MSc), or I.B.M.S. Fellowship.
- Extensive post State Registration experience, including experience as a senior Healthcare Scientist.
- Management experience and knowledge appropriate to the post is required. This may be represented by a formal management qualification.
- Specialised scientific/technical knowledge is required by the post holder to perform their duties effectively and to advise others.
- Evidence of continuing professional development, for example a portfolio of highly developed specialist knowledge, including management and service development.
- Good communication, planning, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate a high level of competence in problem solving and prioritising workloads.
- Trained in software packages to manipulate information and present data
- A Quality Management qualification is desirable
The post is based at the Microbiology Laboratory at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and there is also a requirement to work at the Microbiology Laboratory, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. Both laboratories are covered by a single UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation number and single quality management system.
GRI & QEUH Microbiology laboratories are both state of the art facilities, which contains extensive microbiology equipment such as Vitek-2, Vitek-MS, Virtuo Blood Culture analysers, WASP/WASPLab and MGiT TB analysers.
GG&C Microbiology processes around 800,000 requests per annum from a wide range of clinical specialties and includes an Environmental (air and water) testing laboratory and a Mycology section. The laboratory holds UKAS accreditation for both the ISO 15189 and ISO 17025 standards.
