Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist
Anaesthetics & Critical Care

Reference: CG2573

NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.

To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Applications are invited for a full time consultant anaesthetist to work in the cardiothoracic unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This post has arisen due to retirement. Duties include the provision of perioperative care and anaesthesia to patients requiring cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery or cardiology procedures. In addition, you will provide senior medical cover for the 18 bedded cardiothoracic critical care unit. The on-call commitment for the post will be approximately 1:9 with prospective cover.

Newly appointed Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists will be expected to provide peri-operative care, anaesthesia and critical care management for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and invasive cardiology procedures.

The post holder will deliver:

  • 6.15 PAs of direct clinical care to cardio-thoracic anaesthesia & critical care
  • 1.85 PAs of non-resident out of hours cover to cardio-thoracic anaesthesia and critical care (approximate frequency of on-calls will be 1 in 9)
  • 2.0 PA for supporting professional activities.

The direct clinical care component of the post will be delivered in a flexible, annualised fashion although the successful candidate may expect to have at least one day per week without commitments to NHS Lothian. Cardiothoracic critical care duties will be worked in one week blocks (Monday to Thursday), with a handover to the weekend on-call consultant on Friday mornings.

As part of a large dynamic organisation offering many national and regional services, we recognise individuals may wish to pursue clinical interests outside of cardiothoracic anaesthesia. This may be accommodated depending on the individual interest and organisational requirements.

For otherwise well qualified applicants, additional supported experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia may be provided following successful appointment to allow practice to be embedded.
