NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.

To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Applications are invited for two Permanent, full time time (40 hours per week) Critical Care consultants in NHS Lothian, to work across critical care units at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE), Western General Hospital (WGH) and St John’s Hospital (SJH). This is an opportunity to join an enthusiastic and dynamic critical care department with a wide range of specialties and clinical interests available. The posts are available immediately.

Prospective applicant will be on or within six months of inclusion on the specialist register for critical care. The posts are full time with 8 direct clinical care programmed activities and 2 supporting professional activities. Up to two extra programmed activities may be available depending on the needs of the service. Although these posts are primarily based in critical care, programmed activities in a base specialty may be negotiable after appointment.

The critical care units are among the busiest in Scotland and treat a diverse range of medical and surgical patients. The department has close links with the University of Edinburgh Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine and there are a range of opportunities to develop an interest in teaching, research or quality improvement work.

Edinburgh and the Lothians offer a vibrant city environment to work and live in, with a wide range of cultural and leisure pursuits available and easy access to the beautiful surrounding countryside and coastline.
