NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

The expansion of the existing Consultant workforce will allow us to develop new and innovative approaches in the delivery of patient care that meet an increasing demand for Respiratory specialist services. We are seeking to appoint motivated and enthusiastic colleagues to work with the team in NHS Ayrshire and Arran.  The development of a specialist interest is encouraged and fully supported.  We are working as a cohesive and supportive team, continuously striving to explore new ways of improving patient experience and enabling a sustainable work life balance.  These new posts will provide a unique and exciting opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of the Respiratory service.

The existing Respiratory team at University Hospital Crosshouse provide a broad range of specialist respiratory services for the population of North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and Arran. We require expansion in the consultant workforce to meet an increasing demand for specialist services. We are therefore seeking to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic colleague to work with the current team based at University Hospital Crosshouse.

The team at University Hospital Crosshouse work closely with our colleagues in University Hospital Ayr. Across both sites our current team of 8 Consultants provide a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service for a population of approximately 370,000 and is supported by 4 Respiratory Nurse Specialists, 3 Lung Cancer Nurse Specialists, 2 Speciality Doctors and 2 Clinical Teaching Fellows.  There are teaching and research links with the University of Glasgow and Glasgow teaching hospitals. The duties of the post are biased towards the provision of specialist respiratory services. The post also includes an ongoing commitment to the supervision of in-patient general medical patients, receiving duties in the new Acute Medical Receiving Unit (1:17) and participation in the out of hours medical on-call rota (1:8.5 weekends and 1:17 nights) for University Hospital Crosshouse.

There is an active programme of postgraduate education in which all doctors are invited and encouraged to participate.  A one-year education programme for newly appointed consultants covering all topics relevant to the work as a consultant is offered. A wellbeing suite and dedicated support service for consultants and all staff members has recently been expanded.  Appropriate time, support and development will be provided to allow the successful individuals to flourish and realise their professional and personal ambitions and to shape the future clinical service.

The terms and conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004.  The posts are offered on a 10 programmed activity basis initially (including 2 SPAs), but opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities to be undertaken subject to service requirements and in accordance with national terms and conditions of service.  Applications from individuals who may wish to work on a part-time, or job share basis will be considered.

Applicants will be appropriately experienced with Full GMC Registration, including a current Licence to Practice.  Applicants must also be on the Specialist Register GMC or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or CESR in Respiratory Medicine at the time of interview. Specialist registration in General Medicine is desirable but not essential.  Evidence of eligibility of inclusion on the Specialist Register will require to be provided at time of application.
