Edinburgh/Glasgow (SMC is primarily based in Glasgow office) - hybrid working will be required for the foreseeable future

The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) is the national source of advice on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of all new medicines for NHSScotland. Our aim is to ensure that people in Scotland have timely access to medicines that provide most benefit based on best available evidence. SMC is part of the Evidence Directorate within Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

The post-holder is required to direct, lead, manage and be accountable for SMC processes, such as clinical and cost-effectiveness assessment of new medicines and horizon scanning. We are looking for a strategic thinker with excellent leadership skills. We need a pharmacist who is able to prioritise effectively and work well against a background of change and uncertainty and who is self-motivated, proactive, and innovative.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the development and delivery of SMC’s strategic objectives and its work programme including coordinating and prioritising work and ensuring the delivery of key outputs within realistic and achievable timescales and within budget.
  • Lead on the implementation and development of SMC processes in the context of evolving policy, including liaison with pharmaceutical industry, patient group partners, Scottish Government, other areas of Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Area Drugs and Therapeutics Committees and other Health Technology Agencies in the UK and globally.
  • Lead on the preparation of reports and briefing papers for groups and committees as required.
  • Provide highly specialised expert advice on pharmaceutical, clinical and non-clinical issues to other NHS and non-NHS groups and organisations as required. This will include maintaining links with key players across the UK and globally to share best practice and collaborative working. It will also involve representing SMC on national and international working groups and committees relevant to SMC and Healthcare Improvement Scotland work.
