Job Advert
This is an exciting time to join the expanding, friendly and dynamic team of Ophthalmologists currently based at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness who are in the process of transitioning into the new National Treatment Centre – Highland (NTC-H), where first patients will arrive on 3rd April 2023.
The NTC-H building is purpose built and will host the entire Eye Care Service and additional operating capacity for both the Orthopaedic and the Ophthalmology Services, with a 24-bedded ward on site. There will be 2 Orthopaedic theatres for elective hip and knee joint replacement surgery and 3 Operating theatres for Ophthalmology. One of the Ophthalmology theatres will also be used for elective hand and foot surgery 2 days a week.
The NTC-H is sited on the beautiful Inverness Campus. Due to the unique proximity, there are significant opportunities to build on current research, education and innovation links with the University of Highlands & Islands and other key stakeholders.
We are looking for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with general ophthalmology skills with an optional special interest to compliment the existing clinical team. In particular, we are looking for someone who would be interested in performing high volume cataract surgery and can evidence that they have undertaken 1000 cataract procedures at the time of applying.
The successful candidate will join a team of 9 other Consultants; 1 Associate Specialist; 1 Speciality doctor, 3 Specialty Trainees, 4 Clinical Fellows, 8 Orthoptists and 7 Hospital Optometrists, 3 Nurse Practitioners and a dedicated team of Nursing and Administrative staff. Current subspecialty interests provided by the department include vitreo-retina, oculoplastics, glaucoma, uveitis, paediatrics and medical retina. Workload is sufficient to allow duplication in some areas of specialist interest.
The successful candidate will also be expected to have a General Ophthalmology interest with visits to Orkney, and Caithness. The Service provides a visiting
service to the Western Isles, Fort William and depending on departmental job planning, visits to these locations could also be included. The appointee will participate in the on-call rota, making it a 1:7 or 1:8 rota with on call covered 0800 hours to 2000 hours. The post also offers the opportunity for a certain amount of both Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching.
This is a substantive post and is available on a ten programmed activity basis (8 DCC: 2SPA). However, applications for part time and/or flexible working will be actively considered.
Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT at the time of interview.
In April 2023 the department will relocate to a purpose built, redesigned department on the nearby Inverness Campus. There is the intention that this will represent ‘state of the art’ management of ocular conditions, with an emphasis on new imaging technology allowing for remote and virtual working.
