Summary of the Post
We are now seeking to appoint, on a permanent basis, a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine with expertise in Orthogeriatrics. This is based within the Larkfield Unit, a purpose built Rehabilitation Unit, at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital, (IRH) Greenock, with sessional input the Royal Alexander Hospital. The Larkfield Unit boasts excellent in-patient rehabilitation and clinic facilities as well as well-maintained outdoor garden spaces. IRH provides a full range of District General Hospital Specialties with excellent support facilities. We also have a major commitment to education and close links with Glasgow University and there is an active undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme.
We are seeking a highly motivated, innovative, and enthusiastic consultant to join a well-established and friendly Older People and Stroke Service. The post holder will provide orthopaedic liaison, acute assessment and ortho-rehabilitation as well as out-patient falls clinic and support to the frailty service. The Inverclyde area comprises both urban and rural populations. This post provides an exciting opportunity to deliver and develop Older Peoples Services within an expert multi-disciplinary team.
Within this role you will be one of a team of Consultants supported by a dedicated team of specialist nursing staff who are committed to improving the patient pathway to promote and deliver high standards of patient care, outcomes, experience, safety and quality. Your application and interview will demonstrate the skill set needed to join us in delivering, developing and teaching expert care within this exciting and challenging specialty.
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience in all aspects of geriatric medicine including additional evidence of Orthogeriatric expertise.
Duties of the Post
The post is for a Geriatrician within Older People and Stroke Services and has a sub-specialty of Orthogeriatrics. The successful candidate will have a lead role in service development. As we emerge from a challenging two years, we are happy to now be able to revitalise our Orthogeriatric work and are looking for the right person to dynamically lead this service. Included in this work will be integration of local services with the newly launched Major Trauma Pathway.
This post has no mandatory on call or out hours of work.
Geriatric Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Unit (GORU) Service
The primary aim of the Orthogeriatric service is to provide a rapid and comprehensive geriatric assessment to all patients admitted with hip fractures within 72 hours of admission and ensure compliance with the Scottish Standards of Care for Hip Fracture Patients.
The current Orthogeriatric service model includes a Fast-track pathway to transfer care from acute Orthopaedics to GORU. At present, Elderly Care Orthopaedic Nurses (ECONs) commence Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). The Orthogeriatric Consultant provides a liaison service for medically unwell elderly orthopaedic patients and supports the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). The expertise within this modernising team includes an Allied Health Professional Consultant.
The Benefits
Salaries for a Consultant in Scotland start from £91,474 (GBP) to £121,548 (GBP) based on a 40 hour contract (10 sessions). Additional payments can be achieved for extra sessions and on-call commitments. Other benefits include Up to 6.6 weeks holiday per year and 8 days public holidays (pro rata less than full time hours if applicable). An NHS pension scheme, 30 days of study leave entitlement in any three year period and access to the NHS Scotland Discretionary Points financial award scheme. A relocation package up to £8000 to support relocation into the area if necessary.
Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.
Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total – Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.
All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within 6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.
