The shift pattern for this position is five days a week; Monday to Friday 0900-1700 (no participation in shift/out of hours rota).

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for the post of Technical Manager in Haemato-Oncology within the Haematology Department, Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow.  The Technical Manager will provide management oversight of the co-located Regional Immunophenotyping and the Stem Cell Processing services, which form the Haemato-Oncology Laboratory on the GGH site.   

The Immunophenotyping service provides flow cytometry analysis supporting the Regional haematology service with a testing repertoire that includes specialist analysis of tissues and cells for a wide range of malignant and non-malignant disorders. The laboratory also delivers the national minimal residual disease (MRD) flow cytometry service to support the paediatric and young adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) trial (ALLTogether).     

The stem cell processing service supports the regional autologous transplant service, the national allogeneic transplant service and the national CAR-T service (adult and paediatric services).  The laboratory is responsible for the receipt, testing, processing, storage and distribution of haemopoietic progenitor cell and mature cell products.   

The post holder will have a key role in the managerial oversight and continuing development of the immunophenotyping and stem cell processing services.  They will be responsible for the establishment and implementation of all service policies and procedures that are required to meet the standards of UKAS and JACIE and will work with the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) Designated Individual to ensure compliance with all legislative requirements. ​​​​​​

The post holder is responsible for making the best use of all resources including staff, equipment and consumables in an environment that is safe and conducive with best working practices.  The post holder will ensure implementation of relevant NHS policies and directives and to interpret and apply relevant organisational, local and national guidelines and policies.  

The shift pattern for this post is Monday – Friday 0900 -1700.  The post holder will be required to work flexibly according to the needs of the department, but this does not involve participation in the 24 hour working arrangement of the Haematology Department. 

Potential candidates must have the following qualifications: 

  • BSc Honours Degree that meets the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). 
  • Appropriate State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council is mandatory. 
  • Healthcare Science Masters Degree/IBMS Fellowship plus further professional training, development and experience 
  • A management qualification (e.g. Diploma) or equivalent management training would be desirable 
  • Experience of working in an immunophenotyping and/or a stem cell processing lab is highly desirable but it is recognised that the specialist nature of the job means that a degree of professional development may be required
