HNC Healthcare & Pre-Registration Programme – 2023
This programme is an exciting collaboration with NHS Tayside, Dundee & Angus College, Perth College, University of Dundee and Edinburgh Napier University.
NHS Tayside is excited to call for applications for the HNC 2023 cohort which will start in September 2023. This programme is open to Healthcare Support Workers who are employed in NHS Tayside and will have been at least one year in post by September 2023.
The Healthcare & Pre-Registration Programme is a Higher National Certificate (HNC) course run by Dundee & Angus (D&A) and Perth Colleges.
On successful completion of this one year HNC course, Healthcare Support Workers are then able to enter the second year of the courses below:
- Adult and Mental Health – BSc in Nursing at University of Dundee.
- Learning Disabilities - BN in Nursing at Edinburgh Napier University.
Successful Completion:
Students finishing the three year programme will gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
NHS Tayside guarantees Newly Graduated Practitioners a Band 5 post within the organisation.
To be eligible to apply, Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) should:
- Have a minimum of one year’s employment as a HCSW within NHS Tayside holding a substantive contract for a minimum of 22.5 hours per week prior to application.
- Be aware that the programme requires a full-time 37.5 hour commitment regardless of whether you hold a Part Time or Full Time contract.
- Be able to demonstrate strong evidence of professional development and CPD within the recent employment period.
- Have completed recent educational activity demonstrating the ability to undertake academic study, e.g. SQA modules, Cleanliness Champions/Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Pathway (SIPCEP).
- Have full support and recommendation from their line manager.
- Have a good attendance record and be able to demonstrate evidence of flexibility to service needs.
- Have knowledge of the NMC, and why the NMC Code is important as a registered practitioner.
- Possess the ability to reflect on previous training and experiences, and understand how this can improve their future practice.
- Have an understanding of the transition from an employment contract to a training contract and what this means.
- Be able to commit to a three year study programme.
- Have completed the International English Language Test System (IELTS) and achieved a minimum pass of Level 7 in each category if their first language is not English

Applications will be subject to a stringent short listing process and successfully short listed applicants will be invited to interview which will take place virtually on Microsoft Teams. Interview Panels will include College and University representatives and a Senior Charge Nurse.
Interviews for the programme will be held throughout May 2023.
