Director of Public Health

The Director of Public Health position can be either a Medical appointment or a non-medical appointment.   

Medical Appointment

Consultant Salary Scale: £91,474 - £121,548 per annum (pro rata for part-time)

plus Chief Administrative  Medical Officer & Directors of Public Health Supplement £12,861

OR

Non-Medical Appointment

Executive and Senior Manager Grade G

Salary range: £110,971 - £148,650 per annum (pro rata for part time)

NHS Glasgow Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest health system and teaching Board in Scotland with an annual budget of £3.9 billion (2022/23) it employs around 40,000 staff. We provide the full range of Acute, Mental Health, Community and Primary Care services to a diverse population of 1.2 million people in six local authority areas. Regional and national services are also provided across a range of clinical specialties.

 We are looking to recruit a transformational and visionary leader with the strategic and professional skills, drive and passion to take forward the role of Director of Public Health within the largest NHS Board in Scotland

The Role 

Our Public Health Directorate covers the public health functions of Public Health Protection, Health Services, Health Improvement, Vaccination Programmes Delivery, Resilience and Child Health commissioning.

Our ambitious ‘Turning the Tide’ Public Health Strategy sets out our commitment to prioritising public health and tackling inequalities by bringing prevention to the fore with the aim of accelerating improvements in health life expectancy for both men and women. 

The Director of Public Health is an Executive Director of the NHS Board and provides public health leadership and advice to the Board and the surrounding Local Authorities, supporting the work of our six Health and Social Care Partnerships in assessing and improving health. 

 The successful candidate will have a key role to play in forging relationships and working collaboratively with local community planning partnerships and other local agencies to ensure the widest participation in the public health and wellbeing agenda.

The role demands a high level of political awareness and the personal credibility to quickly gain respect and influence change across multiple sectors and stakeholders.

As well as leading the Public Health Directorate, a significant part of the role will also involve driving the Board’s recovery from the pandemic, with leadership of our ongoing vaccination services and the Glasgow Centre for Population Health.     

This role is at the heart of the strategic leadership of public health working across Greater Glasgow and Clyde and at a national level across Scotland. 

The new Director will work closely with our academic partners on population health and quality improvement programs, alongside our approach to continuous improvement, mobilising behaviour science, social marketing and core public health programmes to maximise the prevention of disease, prolong healthy life and promote health and wellbeing for our population.

About You

We are looking for an exceptional candidate who will bring extensive Public Health leadership experience and who can drive forward a wide portfolio of Public Health initiatives along with a commitment to tackling inequalities and improving outcomes for people and communities across the whole of Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

A proven track record of accomplishment operating at a Board /Corporate level within the NHS / Local Government and partnership settings or an equivalent large complex environment is essential. The role is likely to suit an existing or aspirant Director of Public Health.

As this is a pivotal Board role beyond the provision of public health leadership and professional advice, the new Director must be able to contribute across the entirety of the corporate leadership agenda and strategic objectives of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Candidates must evidence the essential criteria of appropriate experience of Public Health Medicine practice along with the ability to demonstrate a high level of expertise in the Faculty of Public Health Competencies.
