Job Advert

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Base flexible within Board area, with hybrid home and office working in place

NHS Highland are seeking a talented and inspirational Director of People and Culture to join our highly engaged and motivated Executive team in leading our organisation through the long-term impacts of the pandemic, financial recovery and the ongoing transformation of our services and workplaces.  This post will have a key role in ensuring that we are a “Great Place to Work” for all our colleagues and partners who deliver  and support good health and care outcomes across our communities.

This isn’t an HR Director role, it’s a corporate leadership role which has oversight of all aspects of the People function as well as Occupational Health and Safety, Communications and Engagement, Board Governance and Executive Administration.  It is a member of the Executive Directors Group and a key attendee at Board as well as the lead executive for Staff Governance Committee, Health and Safety Committee and the Area Partnership Forum.  At NHS Highland, our Executives are be expected to support wider organisational priorities and contribute outside their individual areas, including supporting colleague and community engagement and involvement.

NHS Highland covers 41% of the land mass of Scotland, has a budget of over £1bn and employs 10,500 colleagues and is a fully integrated health and care system, with the Lead Agency model of the Highland Health and Social Care Partnership, created in 2012 as well as an Integrated Joint Board overseeing the model in Argyll & Bute.

Significant progress on our performance, governance, leadership, finances and culture has been made over the last 3 years, but we must transform our services to meet the long-term needs of our population in a sustainable and affordable way, through our NHS Highland Together We Care 5-year Strategy, as well as supporting the delivery of the Argyll & Bute Integrated Joint Board Strategic Plan.  In common with all health and care organisations, we have reducing funding as well as increasing costs and demands, alongside key workforce skills shortages and gaps.  Attracting, retaining, and supporting our workforce, keeping them safe and well whilst at work, effectively communicating and engaging with our colleagues and communities and having a robust assurance system are all key elements which this post will oversee.

You will be a highly visible, motivated, and experienced corporate leader with a proven track record in senior roles with good experience and understanding of the People agenda, Health and Safety leadership and governance and assurance within a large and complex organisation.  Whilst a CIPD qualification is desirable, it’s not essential, more important is experience of creating a vision, driving innovation and improvement, and providing inspirational leadership to our wider team and organisation.  Our ideal candidate will be kind, compassionate and collaborative with a strong focus on people and outcomes, not processes.
