About the Organisation:

Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, and with an annual budget of around £60 million. PHS provides authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It leads the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and contributes to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.

The Post:

You will be focussed on transforming Scotland’s public health system, through effective working relationships with stakeholders such as NHS Scotland, Scottish Government and partner organisations.

The post will report directly to the Director of Public Health Science / Medical Director.

The post holder will provide professional leadership, management and specialist clinical advice on environment and emergency response within a national context. They will have responsibility for monitoring and investigating the extent and impact of the relevant environmental/social/economic factors on public health, working to ensure that steps are in place to reduce their impact and evaluating the impact of control measures. To achieve these goals, the post holder will work in partnership with a range of organisations, including the academic sector, securing funding, and developing and leading on a portfolio of national and international research projects, as appropriate.

The post holder will provide strategic leadership in environment & emergency response to a multidisciplinary team within PHS, leading a cross-organisational programme in their key topic area.

The post holder will participate in the delivery of health protection out of hours and during periods when surge capacity is required.

The Candidate:

The post holder should have specialist knowledge in either environment or emergency response within a national context.

The post holder must be registered on the Specialist Register of the General Medical/Dental Council in Public Health, or on the UK Public Health (Specialist) Register.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who have lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.

Location and Work Pattern:

The base location is Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Meridian Court, Glasgow. Please note that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Meridian Court to another Glasgow City Centre location.

The work pattern is Monday to Friday, 40 hours (NHS Consultant) / 37.5 hours (AfC) per week. Part time hours may be considered. There will be an expectation for weekend and/or out of hours working.

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
