Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term, full time (40 hours per week) post based in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
This is an innovative new post that combines consultant clinical work with dedicated academic sessions. It is ideally suited for candidates who have combined academic and clinical training and are looking to take the next step in the career of a clinical academic. The role is fully funded for 2 years, which will allow a successful candidate the time and support to be successful in obtaining an externally funded intermediate-level fellowship. The job plan will compose of 50% clinical work and 50% academic/SPA sessions.
This fantastic opportunity to build the portfolio required to achieve a fellowship means that the successful candidate will have shown a very strong track record in academic research and will have obtained either a PhD or an MD. They will have published papers in leading journals and will be able to evidence their skills in designing and analysing the complex data sets that a leading clinical academic will need to use to progress our understanding of mental disorders in older people.
The post holder will have an honorary contract with the University of Edinburgh and will be part of the Division of Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh, led by Professor Daniel Smith. The Division of Psychiatry has a long track record in supporting the careers of many of the leading academic psychiatrists in the UK. The current department has a wide range of strengths but has a particularly strong focus on the use of very large data sets to combine genetic, imaging, behavioural and clinical to understand why people are vulnerable to and the impact of mental disorders. It is one of the leading centres for using UK Biobank data. It is also very well integrated into the Edinburgh University’s Usher Institute which is aiming to use Scotland’s health data to further develop our understanding. There is a thriving wider mental health research network within Edinburgh University, with a range of projects ongoing for older people.
The clinical component of the post will be negotiated with the successful candidate. There are a range of opportunities within the psychiatry of old age department. These include in-patient sessions, community mental health team sessions and dementia assessment sessions.
