SURGICAL RESEARCH FELLOW

COMMENCING AUGUST 2023

 FOR A PERIOD OF 12 MONTHS

SALARY SCALE: £38,051 - £55,073 PLUS ON-CALL BANDING


This is a unique opportunity to undertake original research and be based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Applications are invited from surgeons in training who wish to undertake a period of full time research, or deliver education, leading towards a post-graduate degree.  The Academic Surgical Unit is run by Professors Angus Watson and Ken Walker.

There are a variety of options available. These include registering for an MSc in Health Science (University of Aberdeen), the distance learning ChM in General Surgery (University of Edinburgh) or an MSc in Medical Visualization with Glasgow School of Art. Registering for a Masters in Medical Education is also an option. Applications to undertake original research leading towards an MD/PhD are also encouraged. If successful you will be based in the Centre for Health Science at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. You will take part in the middle grade surgical rota at Raigmore Hospital covering weekday nights and weekends. The MSc in Health Science is an internationally recognised degree which consists of taught and thesis components. The ChM is an option for advanced trainees in general surgery.  Current research themes include digital health applications, multi-centre clinical studies, surgical simulation and education, telemedicine and quality improvement science.

The unit has an enviably high completion rate for post-graduate degrees.

The Department of Surgery at Raigmore Hospital is based in the City of Inverness, the capitol of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The unit is composed of 21 consultant surgeons working in the specialties of breast, colorectal, upper GI/HPB, vascular and urology. There are 8 middle grade surgeons in addition to one international and one remote and rural fellow. There are strong links with our sister hospitals throughout the Highlands and Islands. ​​​​​​​
