CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN (GENERAL MEDICINE OR EMERGENCY MEDICINE) (Ref: 143562)

Full-time or Flexible Part-time (30 weeks per annum) contract

Salary in range £91,474 - £121,548 per annum (pro rata)

Plus: 8% On-Call supplement, Distant Island Allowance £2,256 per annum (pro rata) and relocation assistance of up to £8,000[1]

NHS Shetland is the most northerly health service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are, of course, a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of a highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations.

The job of Consultant Physician in the Gilbert Bain is for someone who wishes to practice a wide ranging role as general physician and not that of a super specialist or narrow focused physician. As the role can be demanding and patients present with a broad range of pathologies, the Consultant Physicians work closely and collaboratively together offering mutual support and advice, which is also the case across the wider Consultant team. In addition to seeking the support of locally based colleagues we are also able to seek advice from a wide range of specialist colleagues in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, our local tertiary referral centre. We would welcome applications from clinicians from a General or Emergency Medicine background.

We are offering either a full-time post (1.0 WTE, 1:4 on call) with a standard contract or part time posts with a contract for 30 weeks a year (0.58 WTE, 1:4 on call). This is an established blended model and Consultants will be joining a team that includes doctors who live and work in Shetland on a permanent basis, alongside colleagues who provide part time, rotational cover.

The part-time Consultant posts will have a job plan which requires them to work in Shetland up to 17 weeks a year, on a rota providing blocks of cover 4 weeks at a time (which equates to four weeks in every twelve weeks). A further 13 weeks will be paid to enable the Consultant to maintain their clinical skills and special interests (e.g. accessing CEPD, pursuing research interests, global health etc.). NHS Grampian is our nearest tertiary centre, but the Consultant will be able to establish an honorary contract with another suitable organisation, as appropriate to meet their needs. Travel to and from Shetland will be supported and accommodation available to you for each rotation.

The full-time post holder will work in a team to cover the 24/7 rota for Acute Medicine in Shetland with an on-call commitment of 1:4 prospectively.

This is a beautiful part of the world, with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from the metropolitan centres. The diverse nature of Shetland’s culture, the stunning scenery, the wildlife, even the local dialect, as well as the spread of different islands all make for particular professional and personal challenges. For more information and informal enquires contact Dr Pauline Wilson, Consultant Physician via the hospital switchboard on 01595 743000 or via email pauline.wilson2@nhs.scot
