The post:
National Services Scotland (NSS) are seeking to appoint a Consultant in Medical Microbiology / Infection Control Doctor to support strategic and operational activity being undertaken by the Antimicrobial Resistance & Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) Scotland service within NHS Scotland Assure.
NHS Scotland Assure is a new service within NSS bringing together the experience and knowledge of Health Facilities Scotland (HFS) and ARHAI Scotland along with new enhanced services. NHS Scotland Assure aims to improve the management of risk in the healthcare environment across Scotland. In helping to improve healthcare environments, NHS Scotland Assure strengthens clinical outcome-focused relationships, and by ensuring risk is minimised in our healthcare buildings and environments, protects patients from the risk of infection.
ARHAI Scotland is part of NHS Scotland Assure, ARHAI Scotland Priority Services which enable and support a safer and healthier Scotland, leading and supporting efforts to prevent healthcare associated infection by means of guidance development, surveillance, operational support and training, covering areas such as surgical-site surveillance, decontamination, microbiological surveillance, research and infection prevention and control.
The service consists of a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts in the fields of infection prevention and control, hard and soft facilities and building management. Externally, the post will interact with a wide range of stakeholders and service users, including infection prevention and control, facilities and estates, Scottish Diagnostic laboratories and Scottish and UK AMR reference laboratories, medical and a range of clinical colleagues in Boards, as well as relevant representative networks with an interest in this area.
The candidate:
The post holder will have an enthusiastic approach, excellent organisation and communication skills and as part of a multi-disciplinary team (including nurse consultants, medical consultants, engineers, architects, facilities specialists, scientists, administration and management colleagues), must have a proven track record as a team player. It is also vital that you demonstrate the NSS values of working with respect and care, openness and integrity, to focus on our customers, demonstrate commitment to each other and excel and improve.
The post holder will play an important role in a range of activities to support NHS Scotland Assure Services and Priority Programmes of work with a focus on reducing the risk of infection in the healthcare environment. As such, the post-holder should have substantial experience of infection control practice within the UK NHS or in broadly equivalent roles and have practical experience of facilitating change in clinical practice.
Appropriate governance for the professional responsibilities and delivery of outputs for this post holder will be agreed in conjunction with the successful applicant, including line management.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who have lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
The post is subject to the terms and conditions of service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and Doctors in Public Health and the Community Health Service (Scotland) Consultant Grade. The contract will be held by NSS and candidates must have current GMC registration at the time of applying.
Location and working pattern:
The contract location of this role will be Meridian Court, Glasgow, however, we promote hybrid working with significant scope for working from home. The post holder will be required to travel to hospital and elective care centre sites across Scotland. Some travel between NSS sites may be required.
it should be noted that NSS is currently in the process of relocating from Meridian Court to nearby Delta House, 50 West Nile Street Glasgow G1 2NP. Your contractual location will change to Delta House on the date of relocation, which is anticipated to take place no later than 31st August 2023.
This is a permanent post for 10 programmed activities per week (5 days) to be worked Monday to Friday with no requirement for on-call rota participation.
