Job Advert

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow appointment in Palliative Care Medicine at ST3 level based in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The post is available for 12 Months from 2nd August 2023. This is an excellent opportunity to experience Specialist Palliative Care across specialist inpatient unit, hospital and community settings. The Specialist unit is an eight bedded unit within the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, and the team enjoys excellent links with the acute hospital teams.

The successful candidate will be contracted for 40 hours per week plus 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday on a 1 in 5 weekend rota.

The Palliative Medicine department is committed to training and developing all junior doctors equally and holders of these posts will participate in departmental teaching. They will be encouraged and supported in attending relevant courses. Ours is a relatively small department with an excellent team spirit. In addition to the Consultant there are two Specialty Doctors to support the applicant.

To practice medicine in the UK you need to hold both full GMC registration and a license to practice. To be eligible for the post you must have completed foundation training and two years post foundation or equivalent.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway serve a population of approximately 148,500 within a large geographical area of about 2,400 square miles. Dumfries and Galloway stretches from Langholm in the East to Drummore in the West, and from Kirkconnel and Carsphairn in the North down to Sandyhills on the Solway Coast. The Health Board currently employs around 4500 staff excluding GPs and Dentists.

Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is a brand new 344 bed state of the art hospital based in Dumfries. It is the main hospital for the region providing a wide range of inpatient and outpatient health services.  Some services are still provided at the old hospital, now known as the Mountainhall Treatment Centre, on the other side of the town. The Galloway Community Hospital, which serves Stranraer and the west of the region, is an intermediate unit providing maternity services, as well as medical & surgical beds. There are bedded units within eight cottage hospitals which provide care services such as minor injuries units.  Midpark Hospital provides inpatient facilities for mental health patients.

Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful and mostly undiscovered part of Scotland.  This post would suit a doctor who enjoys walking, running, cycling, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.  We are only a 90 minute drive away from the Lake District.  We are also close enough to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle for those who enjoy the bright lights and city life
