CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN

FULL-TIME, ANNUALISED HOURS, PART-TIME, OR GLOBAL CITIZEN CONTRACTS AVAILABLE- the choice is yours

We are looking for a Consultant Physician to join our small friendly and eclectic team of physicians, rural emergency physicians, surgeons and anaesthetists delivering high quality care from our rural general hospital in the far North of Scotland. We now have permanently employed doctors commuting by planes, trains, automobiles and boats from London to Orkney. We train, we teach, we innovate and we take joy in delivering a high quality service in a remote and rural area and in supporting each other to do so. We are entwined with Raigmore, specialists work between the hospitals fostering a supportive and mutually beneficial relationship.

This role can be designed around you as we understand the need for flexibility and a life out with your work: we can offer full-time, annualised hours, part time work or a Global Citizens contract. The job can offer 10 weeks per annum of overseas work which will be captured in your Job Plan alongside the work in NHS Scotland. You will have the support of the Global Health Academy, which can identify projects for you to join overseas and can assist in travel and visa arrangements for self directed projects.

This is a chance to be a true generalist with superb continuity of care. Our case mix is varied, our number of presentations is relatively low, we have excellent team relationships and a community feel which allows you to practice medicine in a deeply satisfying way. Out-patient consulting for both general medicine and a specialist interest can be accommodated.

As part of our COVID response we rapidly redesigned the hospital environment enabling the creation of a 17 bed infection unit with negative pressure isolation rooms fit for a much larger specialised unit.  We were the first rural general hospital enrolled in the RECOVERY trial. We want to expand our research and teaching activities. Our medical students and FY2s rotate from Aberdeen; we have a mix of GPSTs some from Inverness and some on the rural tract program working between here and the islands.

We have close ties to the community who recently donated a large number of iPads as well as free meals, accommodation and large amount of goodwill during the COVID peak. A fish van selling fresh lobsters and langoustines visits the hospital twice weekly.

Applicants who wish to work part time are encouraged to apply. You must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register with a Licence to Practice or within six months of obtaining CCT in General Medicine at time of interview. We would support specialist interests. Candidates are encouraged to visit the department.

Applicants not currently on the specialist register for general medicine would also be considered for a fixed term contract in the first instance.

Informal enquiries will be welcomed by Dr Sabih Huq, Clinical Lead, sabih.huq@nhs.scot or Pam Garbe, Rural Hospital General Manager. Tel: 01955 880 359.
