Clyde Sector is seeking to develop its Internal Medicine department by recruiting Physicians with an interest in Renal Medicine to diversify the existing specialty skill mix and establish Renal as a new sub-specialty. Participation in GIM on call and with in-patient care will form part of the role, with ongoing strong links with the Glasgow Renal and Transplant Unit. While the outline below specifies base hospitals, it may be possible, dependent on the successful candidates’ preferences to develop a multi-site team approach which could allow greater flexibility for providing in-patient services.

Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH)

IRH is a DGH serving 125,000 population located in Greenock, just 45 minutes from the centre of Glasgow. It has recently been classed in the top 2% nationwide for Internal Medicine training. It currently includes in-patient medical subspecialties of acute medicine, cardiology, diabetes and endocrinology, respiratory and rheumatology. The Inverclyde Renal Dialysis unit cares for 64 haemodialysis patients and there is a weekly Renal Clinic at IRH including low clearance and transplant follow up patients.

The IRH is seeking 2 physicians with an interest in renal medicine from August 2023. There will be a 60:40 split of GIM: renal medicine.

Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH)

RAH is the largest hospital in Clyde and serves a population of 220,000. It acts as the sector trauma centre, and accepts patients from the Vale of Leven Hospital who fall outwith the selected medical ‘take’ for the site. The in-patient medical specialties are acute medicine, cardiology, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology, respiratory and rheumatology. There are two renal clinics per week at RAH including low clearance and transplant follow up patients.

The RAH is seeking 1 physicians with an interest in renal medicine from August 2023. There will be a 60:40 split of GIM: Renal Medicine.​​​​​​​

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.  

The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.

Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total – Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.​​​​​​​

All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within 6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.
