Job Advert

Hours:  Full and part time available.

Location: General Critical Care Unit, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen

General Critical Care in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is currently in a position to recruit into band 5 positions.

In autumn 2018, Aberdeen became the first Major Trauma Centre in Scotland and now plays a key role in leading the delivery of specialist trauma care.  The North of Scotland Major Trauma Centre, based in Aberdeen, is one of the largest health campuses in Europe and is now part of an inclusive and collaborative Trauma Network.  In addition, in 2020 Aberdeen Royal Infirmary General Critical Care unit became the only Scottish ECMO centre.  The ECMO service is delivered by a dedicated multi disciplinary team of expert staff who have developed our service over the past 15 years.  Aberdeen has a platinum award for ECMO service delivery, one of only 20 centres around the world to achieve this.  There will be opportunity to apply for further training and development within the ECMO team for those staff that demonstrate the required academic and clinical aptitude.

We have fantastic opportunities for staff to join our highly dynamic, specialist and multi-disciplinary team to improve trauma and critical care; locally, regionally and nationally.

The General Critical Care Unit has 30 beds across 2 units and admits from NHS Grampian, NHS Shetland/Orkney as well as accepting patients from NHS Highland & Tayside if/when the need arises. Patients admitted require either level 2 or 3 care for a broad spectrum of critical illnesses.

The expectation includes you having excellent care values, a strong sense of team spirit and a motivation & commitment to lifelong learning. Currently we are looking for nurses with varied experience in an acute clinical area and who have also successfully undertaken the Flying Start program.  Once recruitment checks have been completed and a start date set, applicants will be given a supernumerary period.  Those with no ICU/HDU experience will be expected to complete the programme of Critical Care education.  This is a work-based learning programme at honours level accredited by either Aberdeen or Dundee University and successful completion of this module awards 30 Scot-Cat points.

Working in Aberdeen’s General Critical Care Unit also affords the opportunity to train and work in the Hyperbaric Unit, which is the only category 1 Hyperbaric Chamber in Scotland.   We provide an elective service for a variety of conditions and a 24 hour emergency service to treat divers suffering from decompression illness.

All ICU staff contribute to the extensive work being done locally around various national improvement programs.

Aberdeen City is well known for its superb quality of life and enjoys first class amenities.  There are excellent connections with other British cities and Europe, flying time to London is just over one hour with more than 20 daily flights - and road and rail links to all points north and south are easily accessible.  Aberdeenshire includes some of the most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm National Park and a wide range of outdoor pursuits within easy reach or commute of the city.

Become an important part of a large team, at the heart of delivering high quality, patient centered care for the half-million people who live in Grampian.  Not to mention, enjoy some of our numerous benefits and excellent resources.

An attractive relocation allowance of up to £8,000 is available to successful candidates.

Informal visits to the unit are available – this will give you a valuable insight into the scope and practice of ICU and an opportunity to ask questions before you apply.  To arrange a visit, or get further information please contact the SCN in charge on 01224 553022.

Interviews will be held on 7 July 2023.
