The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary seeks to appoint an Anaesthesia trainee or specialist to work out of program as a research fellow for two years. The post will be available from 02/08/2023, however a start date up until 02/10/2023 will be considered. This post would suit an Anaesthesia trainee who wishes to gain research experience and a post graduate qualification. Prospective candidates will require to be on the GMC Register, hold a license to practice and fulfil the minimum requirements of 4 years of post-graduate training of which at least 2 years are in Anaesthesia.
The Research Fellow is a full-time post (40-48 hours per week) which is a half-time research (20 hours per week, ring fenced) and half time clinical post (24 hours per week, negotiable up to 28 hours per week). The post includes the opportunity to complete a Masters by Research (MMedSci) with the University of Edinburgh over two years. The Masters by Research program at the University of Edinburgh includes a taught element to help the student gain an understanding of research methodology. The successful applicant will by automatically enrolled in this Masters program. The successful applicant will have their fees for the University of Edinburgh MSc paid for as part of this post (£5200/year, international student fees are higher and a successful international candidate would be required to contribute towards the fees). The research fellow has the opportunity to work their research hours flexibly. Some of the research days may be worked from home.

The MMedSci research project will use qualitative research methods to investigate healthcare workers and patients’ views on acute pain management. Interviews will be with staff working at DGRI and one other hospital (to be arranged). The academic supervisors are Dr Alasdair Hay (Consultant Anaesthetist and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh) and Dr Gosha Wojcik (Lecturer at Napier University, Edinburgh https://www.napier.ac.uk/people/gosha-wojcik . The successful candidate will also be working closely with Libby Jardine, Acute Pain Nurse. No prior experience of qualitative research is required. There will also be the opportunity to get involved in other research and QI projects in the department.
The Department has a long history of contributing to Multi Centre research with a high recruitment rate. We are currently Scotland’s third highest contributor (in absolute numbers) to the Recovery COVID-19 trial.
The main clinical commitment will be contributing out-of-hours resident partial shift rota, approximating to a 1-in-7 rota. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to cover either of the two out-of-hours rotas (Anaesthesia including Obstetrics and Critical Care). Daytime activity will include the opportunity to run elective and emergency operating lists with appropriate supervision for the case mix (approximately 1 list per week including on-call emergency theatre lists).
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine is housed in purpose designed offices alongside the 17-bed Critical Care Unit and adjacent to our Operating Theatre complex. There is a large open plan office for trainees which is also the social hub of the Department due to the beverage facilities and outstanding views! Single ‘hot desk’ rooms are also available for private study. The new Hospital was opened in December 2017 and is very well equipped with much of the design being influenced by members of the Department. There is a well equipped Education Centre as well as excellent educational facilities within the Department.
The Critical Care Unit is a 17-bed combined Intensive Care and High dependency unit with 100% single rooms. It is very well equipped, currently with Excel ventilators, Philips monitoring and ultrasound and echocardiography available. Multi-modality renal support is used with excellent support from the renal unit. The Philips ICCA system is a fully integrated multi disciplinary electronic patient record.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine has a regular commitment to teaching Glasgow students in their 3rd and 4th year and ScotGEM students in their 2nd and 3rd years (ScotGEM is a 4 year postgraduate degree run by St Andrews and Dundee that is based mainly in primary care with secondary care ‘bursts’). The Dumfries undergraduate teaching programme is highly rated by our students whose feedback places us right at the top of the West of Scotland teaching league table in Surgery (including Anaesthesia), Medicine and Emergency Medicine. In addition the Department participates in training programmes for Foundation doctors including teaching practical skills and has several students and junior doctors joining us for taster weeks. We run a monthly half day educational meeting for the department and there is an educational programme of scenarios and M&M meetings for the Theatre and Critical Care staff. PLS, APLS, ALS and ALERT courses are run in house and there are opportunities to teach for suitably qualified individuals.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway serves a population of approximately 148,500 within a large geographical area of about 2,400 square miles. Dumfries and Galloway stretches from Langholm in the East to Drummore in the West, and from Kirkconnel and Carsphairn in the North down to Sandyhills on the Solway Coast. The Health Board currently employs around 4500 staff excluding GPs and Dentists.
Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is a brand new 344 bed state of the art hospital based in Dumfries. It is the main hospital for the region providing a wide range of inpatient and outpatient health services. The Galloway Community Hospital serves Stranraer and the west of the region; it is an intermediate unit providing maternity services, as well as medical & surgical beds. There are bedded units within eight cottage hospitals which provide care services such as minor injuries units. Midpark Hospital provides inpatient facilities for mental health patients.
Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful and mostly undiscovered part of Scotland. This post would suit a doctor who enjoys walking, running, cycling, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. We are only a 90 minute drive away from the Lake District. We are close enough to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle for those who also appreciate the bright lights and city life.
