An exciting opportunity has arisen to join NHS Borders Senior Leadership Team in a key role as the Director of Pharmacy.  The Borders General Hospital is the district general hospital serving the Scottish Borders Region and we work closely with our Health & Social Care partnership.  Serving a population of around 115,250, we provide a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services.

We are looking for a candidate who has significant experience of working in senior and strategic leadership roles and is able to evidence excellence in leading others in delivering safe and effective pharmaceutical care across all settings.  The successful candidate will be dynamic and share core values of innovation, creativity, compassion, caring and kindness in all aspects of leadership and patient care and embody these in their day to day work.  This post includes financial and staff management and the provision of expert advice on pharmaceutical matters to the organisation, senior managers and prescribers.

The post holder will be responsible for strategic and operational planning within the pharmacy service, working across NHS Borders and the Health and Social Care Partnership to ensure the delivery of agreed standards of pharmaceutical care for the identified patient population, safely, effectively and within the limits of the resources. Good team working and interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to provide professional leadership to take forward service development and ensure the continued success and response of our service to the changing, and challenging, healthcare environment.

The Director of Pharmacy will be the Pharmacy Superintendent as defined in the Medicines Act 1968, for NHS Borders and the Pharmaceutical Adviser to the Board and Accountable Officer – Controlled Drugs as defined in UK Health Act 2006 and The Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management and Use) Regulations 2006.

To be successful, the applicant will need to have a Masters level (or equivalent) qualification in Pharmacy or equivalent (or demonstrate equivalent experience) and be registered with the GPhC.  Evidence of leading and developing services and teams and experience of organisational change is desirable. In addition, the successful applicant will need to demonstrate considerable experience as a Senior Pharmacist with managerial and leadership responsibilities as a significant and core part of current or past roles.

Interviews will be held on Friday 18 August 2023

We will hold the assessments and interviews in person.  There will be an option for these to be done via Teams and electronically, if required.
