Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Clinical Scientist in Medical Microbiology within NHS Lothian Infection Service (NIS). This new full-time post supports the work of NIS throughout NHS Lothian and may be based between sites at St. John’s Hospital, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Western General Hospital. It is an integral part of the Clinical Microbiology service. The successful applicant will work with a range of full and part-time Microbiology Consultants (9 Medical and 1 Clinical Scientist) and Healthcare Scientists.

As part of the Microbiology clinical team you will be responsible for providing diagnostic and treatment advice across NHS Lothian. The on-call rota covering evenings and weekends is 1 in 7-10.

The post includes involvement in Infection Prevention and Control, teaching, research and service development with the balance between direct clinical care and supporting professional activities to be discussed and agreed with the successful applicant.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated scientist with experience and knowledge in molecular diagnostics. Applicants should have a professional attitude, good interpersonal skills and be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The post will involve communication with medical, nursing and scientific colleagues throughout NHS Lothian as well as to other health boards. The post-holder will also develop new services in accordance with the requirements of the department.

There is an active R&D programme within the field of diagnostic and molecular microbiology and the successful applicant will be encouraged to become directly involved with this and develop their own research interests.

Applicants should be HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists in Medical Microbiology and have FRCPath Part 2 by examination.
