The post will be for 12 months duration 2nd Aug 2023 to 6th Aug 2024 although expressions of interest for a six-month position will be considered.

One clinical teaching fellow post will feature 50% clinical duties during daytime hours and 50% commitment of time towards delivering Orthopaedic Undergraduate teaching. This will be for 4th and 5th year University of Dundee medical students throughout the academic year and an annual  6-week intensive block of 2nd year teaching including lectures, small group teaching and clinical skills. There will be an out of hours component, which is currently 1:9 on a junior registrar tier. The on-call service includes an FY2, junior registrar, senior registrar and a consultant. This makes for a well-supported system in which the successful candidate will be able to develop the skills and knowledge needed to manage a range of trauma and orthopaedic pathologies.

The successful applicant will gain supervised exposure to elective orthopaedic and trauma surgery through active attendance in clinics, theatres and on-call / admission roles. The  successful applicant will be offered the opportunity to develop an audit/research project supported by the Institute of Motion Analysis and Research in Dundee University and also have opportunity to complete the postgraduate certificate in medical education at the University of Dundee.

The NHS Tayside Trauma & Orthopaedic Service is delivered from three main hospitals. Trauma patients are currently admitted to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. This is a Level 2 Trauma Centre, where T&O colleagues form a large part of the Major Trauma team and attend all trauma calls. Elective services together with additional fracture clinics are delivered at Perth Royal Infirmary, Perth and Stracathro Hospital, Brechin.  All three hospitals are affiliated with the University of Dundee Medical School and undergraduate students are embedded in all of our clinical activities. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to work flexibly between sites to undertake both their educational and clinical duties.

Informal enquiries are welcomed by: Mr Stephen Dalgleish, Clinical director, Mr Simon Johnson, East of Scotland Training Programme Director (email: simon.johnson@nhs.scot) or Mr Alasdair MacInnes, Undergraduate Teaching Lead (email: Alasdair.macinnes@nhs.scot)

Hours of work are:  40 per week + appropriate banding

Short-listed applicants will be contacted by email.   Please check your emails regularly, including your junk/spam folder.
