Job Advert

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is 0830-1630 M-F.

Leverndale Hospital is a scenic green site in the South of the city close to Silverburn Shopping Centre. It has 16 wards focusing on the in-patient management of service users with mental illness through various stages of their recovery journey. The wards are spread over a wide area with plenty of opportunities to be outdoors.

It is easily accessible via public transport train and bus, is on cycle route 75 and there is secure on site cycle storage and staff showering facilities as well as ample parking spaces. There is a Tesco Express on the edge of the site with a staff canteen and café on site.

Working hours are normally 0830-1630 but this can be flexible. At the start of the day we meet as a team in the office which you share with Band 3 Physiotherapy HCSW and Band 5 Rotational Physiotherapist. Daily report sheets are accessed which provide information on all wards and details of any incidents along with the telehuddle which gives an account of the current situation on each ward and therapies services on site.

We discuss the plan for the day as a team and access any emails, notes, training at your own desk and PC. A key part of this is prioritising caseload and any doubles/new referrals based on feedback gathered from reports and emails.

The caseload includes older adults, adult acute and adult rehab and typical referrals are for mobility, falls, MSK, exercise and orthopaedic rehab. We are heavily involved in complex cases with multiple physical health needs including moving and handling, specialist equipment and seating, positioning, and onward referral to external services such as Westmarc and orthotics.

A typical day consists of 1-1 sessions and groups.

  • Individual sessions can be ward based or off ward at the gym or in the community for D/C planning including home visits and a hospital based complex care unit. There is a large focus on health promotion and encouraging people to access physical activity in their local community to benefit physical and mental health. Staff have access to hospital vehicles.
  • Group sessions can be in the gym or around the local area utilising the green space around the hospital at the White Cart River and local parks such as Rosshall.
  • Our site is well equipped with plenty of exercise options including a gym, selection of standard and specialist bicycles/tricycles, outdoor gym equipment, rebounders and walking poles.
  • Days will vary depending on scheduled groups and 1-1’s but we all meet as a team again at lunch time and at the end of the day.

Communication includes face to face with the MDT on wards and in meetings, Teams MDT, case conferences for complex individuals and D/C planning meetings.

Time management of your diary allows for a variety of training opportunities both in house and off site. The GGC Mental Health physiotherapy team meet every quarter for in-service training and sharing of knowledge and current projects. Quality Improvement is a key focus within the service and you have opportunities to work on QI projects. This is supported with line management and clinical supervision.

The exciting part of working in mental health is that every day can be different and you can receive referrals covering multiple physical specialities. The challenge of the environment means you continue to learn regardless of experience and you are encouraged to look after your own physical and mental health as part of a supportive team.
