Trainee Assistant Practitioner

 Band 3 (during training period)

Salary Scale – Band 3 - £25,468 - £27,486 / Band 4 - £28,187 - £30,019


The post holder will be required to successfully complete the academic and clinical requirements for the SCQF Level 8 course within a 12 month period. This course is run by the Dundee and Angus college and the successful post holders will be supported with Study Days to attend college days.

Within NHS Tayside we are expanding opportunities for Health Care Support Workers to develop and progress into the role of an Assistant Practitioner.  These are new, exciting and innovative roles supported with education and training from both the NHS Tayside Practice Development Team and Dundee College.  Successful applicants will be supported to complete a Professional Development Award SCQF level 8 at Dundee College.


As an Assistant Practitioner you will be working at the heart of our multidisciplinary teams delivering high quality, patient-centred care. You will be supervised and report to a Registered Nurse.  This will require you to be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals, both verbally and in writing, to share our commitment to maintaining high standards in everything we do, and to demonstrate that you can work effectively within a team that behaves in accordance with our vision and values.


We are seeking to recruit people who are committed to delivering outstanding patient care, taking pride in what they do.  A caring professional manner and excellent communication skills are essential.  You must work well in a high-pressure environment and have the ability to adapt to challenging situations.


Your initial induction program will be followed by a number of professional development opportunities, including clinical skills and on-going comprehensive online learning hub.


Applicants should be able to provide evidence of previous knowledge and relevant experience of working within a caring role/environment using recognition of prior learning. Normally at or working towards a SCQF Level 6 or 7 qualification in a health or social care related subject.  Additionally, numeracy and literacy qualifications are required at this level of practice.


The post will be based in Medicine for the Elderly which could see you based in ward 6, Acute Medicine for the Elderly Assessment Unit (AME, ward 16) and the Frailty Assessment Unit (AFU) in Ninewells Hospital.  Medicine for the Elderly provides inpatient care which is patient-centred and aims to maximise each patient’s potential for recovery which is supported by an excellent Multi Disciplinary Team.


Medicine for the Elderly has a variety of wards, of which each one delivers a specific service to our older people. 


Ward 6 is a 26 bedded unit that supports a longer patient journey, while AME is a 24 bedded unit that supports a patient journey of 48 – 72hrs. The AFU is 6 bedded new and exciting addition to our older people pathway.

Hours of work are:  37.5 hours per week.  You will be expected to work a variety of rotational day and night shifts, including weekends.
