Consultant General Paediatrician in Hospital Paediatrics

Salary Scale - £91,474 - £121,548 per annum (pro rata if part time)

NHS Forth Valley is looking for a committed colleague to join our friendly and supportive Paediatric team.


We seek to appoint a Paediatric Consultant working in hospital Paediatrics and Neonates (BAPM Level 2 Neonatal Unit).

This post has been specifically created to further support the existing Consultant acute rotas and outpatient workload as part of senior medical staff workforce planning.

Development of special interest in subspecialty (acute or community Paediatrics), complementing the service need may be of advantage but is not essential. 

The Combined Department of Child Health currently has a team of 16 Consultant Paediatricians, 2 Associate Specialists, 4 Specialty Doctor Paediatricians, Specialty Trainees, Foundation Year 2 and GP specialist trainees, Clinical Development Fellows, 2 Advance Paediatric Nurse Practitioner (APNP) and 2 Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNP).

From the above - 3 Consultant Paediatricians, 1 Associate Specialist and 3 Specialty Doctors contribute to the delivery of Community Child Health Services in Forth Valley.

The department provides comprehensive paediatric and neonatal care to a population of 310,000 people with 60,000 children under the age of 16 years and about 3,200 deliveries per annum. There is a 25 bedded combined medical and surgical Paediatric ward; a 20 bed Neonatal Unit supporting a Consultant led Obstetric unit and an 8 bed Paediatric Day Care Unit.

Forth Valley Paediatric department participates in several regional and national Managed Clinical networks facilitating the maintenance of specialist interests for all senior medical staff.  Forth Valley Paediatric department has teaching commitments to undergraduates and postgraduates from Edinburgh, Tayside and Glasgow.  Involvement in research is encouraged and active participation in the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (Paediatric, Neonatal and Maternity) is well established.

This appointment aims to support the delivery of our hospital-based Children’s medical services, with acute weeks in hospital Paediatrics, Neonatal hot weeks and Paediatric Outpatients. Acute post includes a share of a non-resident on call and out of hours working.  Acute weeks and on-calls are currently on 1:10 rota.

The successful applicants will be based in the main acute Forth Valley Royal Hospital (FVRH), Larbert. General and specialty outpatient clinics take place in FVRH as well as Stirling Community Hospital and Clackmannanshire Community Health Centre. Community child health clinics are also held in Sensory centre in Camelon and schools in Bo’ness and Grangemouth.
