We have an exciting and challenging post within our small, enthusiastic Public Health Team which encompass supporting and developing a programme of Planet Youth, the Icelandic Prevention Model work. This primary prevention, whole systems approach aims to reduce youth substance use by reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors in young peoples’ lives and local communities.
Working collaboratively across all parts of NHS Highland’s organisational structure and partner agencies, this post will operate throughout the Highland area at times and therefore the post holder must have a current driving licence and access to a car for work purposes.
This post will support the Planet Youth Model work in the school community areas of Golspie, Dornoch and Tain. This post will be based in the area, with the base being either Lawson Memorial Hospital, Golspie, or County Community Hospital, Invergordon. We operate a hybrid working model, and so some work can be carried out at home. We are looking for a candidate with a good local knowledge of the area, which much of the time spent in communities.
You will have a firm understanding of the principles and practice of Public Health/Health Improvement and preferably have health improvement/public health experience; the use of data for assessing need and communicating messages about health; and working with delivery partners and communities. Knowledge of the current context of this agenda, including key national policy drivers and national and local priorities for tackling inequality and promoting health would be advantageous. Candidates should have excellent communication skills and be competent in delivering training. You will be knowledgeable of the effects that inequalities have on health and the causes of health inequalities.
You will have a sound understanding of the communities these posts are to be based in, with knowledge of available services and facilities. You will be well connected within these communities, and be able to mobilise community and influence action. You will have skills to encourage a wide range of community members into the process and help community members and leaders find common priorities on which they can act together.
You will have a SVQ level 4 or above or similar, related health or social care qualification. Candidates should be willing to pursue registration through the Faculty of Public Health practitioner registration scheme.
