Applications are welcome for the above fixed term, full (40 hours per week) post based in Western General Hospital.


Shift pattern: There will be no weekend working but a requirement to work until 10pm.
Likely working pattern will be 3 weeks at 3x 12-hour shifts with a 4th week with 4x 12-hour shifts.

Post Summary: This post will offer the successful applicant the opportunity to develop their clinical and professional competence in a purposeful and supervised manner as an assist to overall career development. Successful applicants will be based in the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit which is a subsidiary of the Acute and General Medicine Unit at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. The key elements of this role will be in supporting the SDEC environment to extend its remit later in the day, develop the Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) project of work which aims at introducing early triage decision making at the front door to decompress overcrowding and to support the medical admissions environment in early supported discharge.

There will be 4 hours per week of protected non-clinical time supervised and directed activity linked to an area of mutual professional interest including clinical teaching, quality improvement and safety, management and leadership development or informatics. The post is aimed at all levels inclusive of FY2+ level and above i.e. those Doctors having completed the UK Foundation programme and having been assessed as "acute take safe" under supervision, looking for some experience of acute care specialties in which they may have a longer-term interest, or to provide a professional development adjunct to any future clinical activity if interested in another non-acute specialty in the longer term. We also welcome applications from more senior doctors than FY2+ and roles are to be negotiable dependent on experience.

The Western General has the benefit of highly collegiate working practices between medical specialties with Respiratory, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Stroke Medicine, Medicine of the Elderly, Cardiology and Gastrointestinal physicians all working closely with Acute Medicine at the front door. Clinical development will be supported in the post and application for a JRCPTB portfolio to assess knowledge and skill against the IMT or other curriculums will be supported. We will be happy to support the successful candidate in applying for a flexible training route of entry into the following training routes: IMT, ACCS and GPST. A course space will be made available for the Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound Course within the Western General Hospital and supervision provided to FAMUS accreditation.

The post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training.
