We are currently seeking highly motivated individuals with a desire to develop their skills to an advanced level within the Department of Acute Medicine, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. The department comprises of a Clinical Decision Unit (CDU), Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) and Medical High Dependency Unit (MHDU)

Successful applicants will be supported to develop their career in acute medicine with opportunities to join the team at Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner level (band 8a +/- annex 21), Advanced Clinical Practitioner (band 7) or trainee ACP (band 7, annex 21).

Applicants will be considered from Registered Nurses, Paramedics, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals with relevant experience and qualifications.


Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioners- Acute Medicine

Senior ACP’s will be aligned to the medical rota equivalent to a junior middle grade trainee (FY2- ST2) and will be expected to independently manage patients who have a higher degree of medical complexity, requiring prompt & independent high level clinical decision making. You will also be expected to supervise junior Medical Trainees, Physician Assocaites, Medical Students, and ANP’s who are attached to the unit during their shift.

In addition, you will be allocated 10-20% non-clinical time to Support Professional Activities (SPA) and as such will be allocated a specific quality improvement portfolio linked to the four pillars of practice. SPA activities may include CPD, trainee supervision, teaching, quality improvement, induction, audit, research and revalidation. Job plans and portfolio work streams will be agreed by the ANP Lead and Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine.

Applicants at Senior ACP level must have acute hospital experience at advanced practice level and have achieved (or working towards) an appropriate Masters level qualification in Advanced Practice which has enabled competence in:

  •  Clinical assessment
  •  Clinical reasoning, judgement and diagnostic decision making
  •  Anatomy and pathophysiology
  •  Non-medical prescribing - V300
  •  Leading, delivering and evaluating care
  •  Practice learning/transferable work-based learning

Applicants who meet the criteria for the Senior ACP post will be appointed to band 8a. For those who require development they will be offered banding appropriate to length of development/training/previous experience and may be offered at band 8a annex 21 or band 7. An individualised development programme will be designed for those developing to senior level based on current knowledge, skills & experience.

Full or part time hours are available with permanent, fixed term and secondments considered.


Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners in acute medicine

Applicants are also invited to join the team as a trainee ACP.

Successful applicants will be supported by an ANP Lead / Practice Development Nurse. You will be provided with a robust and supportive personal development plan with full qualification expected to be gained within 18 months of commencing post.

Successful candidates will be required to undertake a specified training programme to achieve a Post Graduate Diploma through University of the Highlands & Islands which includes Advanced Clinical Examination and Non-Medical Prescribing qualifications. In addition, you will be required to complete the NHS Highland Advanced Practice Competency Framework/Portfolio and achieve final sign off in line with advanced practice national recommendations. Training posts are offered on a full or part time basis (minimum 30 hours) inclusive of dedicated protected learning time of approximately 20% (pro rata).

These training posts will commence in January 2024 and are offered at AfC Band 7 Annex 21.

All posts are rotational across day, evening, weekend and nights.

An attractive relocation package of up to £8,000 may be available to eligible successful qualified candidates.
