The Role

The Addiction Psychology Service (APS) is a Lanarkshire-wide psychological service for individuals with co-existing addiction and mental health problems. APS follows a matched-care model for service delivery, outlined in the paper The Delivery of Psychological Interventions in Substance Misuse Services in Scotland, (Scottish Government, 2018). This report acknowledges that the vast majority of people accessing addiction services use substances to manage psychological distress, and as such psychological interventions are essential for recovery. As part of the matched-care model of service delivery, core activities include providing individual therapy and group therapy; delivering consultation, training and coaching to other professionals; and having input into policy and strategic developments. The post-holder will contribute to the strategic vision of APS, in partnership with key stakeholders.  The impact of high risk alcohol use and problematic drug use remains a key concern for Scotland. A key focus for treatment services is the implementation of standards for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) (Scottish Government, 2021). APS have a key role to play in leading the response to the standards governing psychosocial interventions and trauma informed care, and the post-holder will have a key role in contributing to this work.

This role is at Consultant level to lead on all aspects of service delivery within APS. As well as carrying a clinical caseload appropriate to the demands of the role, the post holder will be required to take a leadership role within the team and will have responsibility for the operational management of APS. The post-holder will be required to have a high level of expertise in relation to addiction and mental health, and be able to provide highly specialist support within APS and the wider psychological and professional community. The post-holder will be required to lead on service development and to represent APS in meetings at various levels.  There will be considerable scope for service development, focus on quality improvement, and service related research.

This post holder will have close professional links and networks within wider Psychological Services and will be a member of the Psychological Services Professional Leadership Team. The post holder will deputise for the Head of Psychological Specialities as required, and inform them and other service leads in regards to developments within APS.
