The Role


This is an excellent opportunity for a Financial Accountant to enhance their knowledge & skills within a large organisation.  You will assist the Financial Accounting Manager in implementing and managing the Shared Financial Accounting Service within the financial services function for NHS Lanarkshire.  You will be focusing on treasury, accounts receivable, VAT and annual accounts, playing a lead role in maintaining an efficient and effective service, ensuring value for money is achieved and deputise for the Financial Accounting Manager, as necessary, on a regular ongoing basis.

You will be able to work autonomously to develop and maintain systems, procedures and controls for all aspects of the Financial Accounting service, to ensure that the accounting system correctly reflects financial information and meets the required, strict monthly reporting deadlines.  In addition, you will lead the management and reporting of the NHS Lanarkshire endowment fund, providing support, specialist knowledge, expertise and advice to the Head of Finance.

Supporting the Financial Accounting Manager to ensure the consistent application and maintenance of the NHS Lanarkshire Corporate and Financial Governance systems, including overseeing sound systems of financial control, complying with recognised Accounting Standards.

What we'll need you to bring

  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent
  • Possession of, or actively studying towards, a professional accounting qualification (CCAB)
  • A high degree of experience and specialist knowledge of complex financial management systems and procedures
  • Staff management experience and a broad range of practical experience at a senior level
  • Interpersonal, influencing and negotiating skills are essential
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and competing demands
  • Requirement for advanced IT skills in a range of IT packages, including excel and word
  • Positive and pro-active attitude


It would be great if you also have

  • Experience of electronic banking processes, eFinancials and Business Intelligence.
  • Experience of accessing; analysing and presenting a wide range of financial information.
  • Knowledge of Government Banking Service processes, credit control and VAT legislation.
  • Being able to travel to different locations within and outside Lanarkshire
