We are pleased to invite applications from Agenda for Change Band 5 Registered Nurses currently practising within the NHS or equivalent health and care settings in either Adult Acute, Mental Health, Addictions or Learning Disabilities.

Prison Health Care Services

Prison Healthcare is provided on four sites in the Glasgow and Inverclyde area - HMP Barlinnie, HMP Low Moss, HMP Lilias Centre and HMP Greenock.

Prison Health Care Services are hosted by Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).   Alongside Senior Nurse Support on shift and a team of Non-Medical Prescribers the staffing profile consists of GPs, psychology team providing primary care, mental health (including psychology), pharmacy, addiction and health improvement services.  In addition services from forensic psychiatry and oral health are also provided.

We work with the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) and other services and agencies to improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing of people within the justice system.

Our prison health care teams work to ensure individuals in custody and prison receive equitable healthcare and support compared to the general population. The health needs of the prison population have become more challenging, with patients requiring more complex health interventions.  This includes an increasing number of older patients presenting a range of comorbidities and an increasing demand for addiction and mental health services.

About the Role

Staff Nurses in Prison Health Care are core members of the multidisciplinary team working in prison healthcare centres. Nurses working in prisons help patients to understand their diagnoses and treatment and support their general health and wellbeing.

Successful candidates will enjoy a diverse role which involves the day to day delivery of high standard, nurse-led care, with significant autonomy to refer on as deemed appropriate whilst maintaining a high level of awareness of and compliance with security procedures within the prison setting.

The post holder will also have a key role in mentorship, supervision and direction of newly appointed nursing staff, health care assistants, nursing and medical students, junior doctors, training of Scottish Prison Service staff with regard to health care issues.

People in prison could often have multiple health conditions. This unique role offers lots of opportunities to provide high-quality care to improve people’s health and wellbeing and help to address health inequalities.

Our Nursing teams come from various nursing backgrounds, including adult, mental health, addictions and learning disability with opportunities open to both newly qualified and highly experienced nurses.

As a staff nurse in a prison health care setting, you’ll work as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing a hybrid of primary and secondary care services.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work across urgent and planned care services; delivering healthcare interventions to support patients in coping with illness, treatment, and recovery by assessing their needs, writing care plans, and monitoring progress.

Our patient group often have complex needs and you will deliver compassionate person centred care to patients from diverse back grounds.

The services provided include ( but not limited to ) : minor injury and illness, long-term conditions , primary mental health , substance misuse , emergency and unscheduled care , health assessments , screening  and vaccinations, health promotion, nurse consultation clinics,  safeguarding  and  medication administration.  

The shift patterns cover both 7.5 hour shifts and long days and it is unlikely that nightshift working or late shifts at weekends are included in rosters.

Your professional practice development is important. We are keen to encourage staff to undertake relevant training and development such as access to university based training such as Integrated Diploma in GP Nursing, Tissue Viability /Leg Ulcer Management, Asthma Management and Diabetes Care. There are many opportunities to further your practice alongside opportunity to progress to specialist nurse or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) roles.

We are seeking applications from candidates who can demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills which are essential as well as the ability to work under pressure and with initiative. Candidates for this role will thrive working in a busy environment within a multidisciplinary team structure.

This role requires as an essential criteria for shortlisting current UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration with a current PIN Number evidenced on the application form, this is an essential criteria. 

Candidates should be educated to degree level or equivalent with post registration experience working within a relevant clinical setting. The ability to demonstrate awareness of professional and clinical accountability, legal issues, role limitations and boundaries and balancing duty of care and public safety issues is essential criteria connected to the role.
