Consultant in Public Health / Public Health Medicine
Salary: Consultant Grade (GMC/GDC registered) OR Agenda for Change Band 8D (UKPHR registered)
About the Organisation:
Public Health Scotland is a new organisation between the Scottish Government and Local Government, working in partnership, to provide leadership to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.
Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, and with an annual budget of around £60 million. Public Health Scotland provides authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It leads the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and contributes to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.
The Post:
We are looking for a Consultant in Public Health / Public Health Medicine to provide public health leadership in relation to the specific area of equity to enable policy and strategy creation for the delivery of key public health goals. Specifically, the postholder will provide public health leadership around human rights, inclusive health, equity, discrimination and stigma. In addition, the candidate will provide clinical governance support and leadership for PHS.
The Candidate:
You will be joining teams embedded within the NHS, but working closely with Community Planning Partnerships, Local Authorities, Integrated Health and Social Care Partnerships, third sector, resilience partnerships and others.
You will be focussed on transforming Scotland’s public health system, through effective working relationships with stakeholders such as NHS Scotland, Scottish Government and partner organisations.
The post holder must be registered on the Specialist Register of the General Medical/Dental Council in Public Health or on the UK Public Health (Specialist) Register.
The post will report directly to the PHS Head of Clinical, Public Health Intelligence & Research.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
Candidates must have current GMC/GDC/UKPHR registration at the time of applying.
Location and Working Pattern:
Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Central Quay, Glasgow.
Please note that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow from early 2024.
Currently hybrid working.
Work Pattern - Monday to Sunday, 40 hours (M&D) or 37.5 hours (AfC) per week.
There are no requirements for on-call, however, during times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
