Public Health Intelligence Adviser

About the Organisation:
Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, and with an annual budget of around £101 million. Public Health Scotland wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives, a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.

The Post: 
Public Health Sciences is a team of approximately 40 staff, committed to improving population health and reducing health inequalities, focusing on the fundamental causes. We employ three main approaches: data and intelligence; evaluation; and evidence synthesis. 

We have a permanent vacancy for a Public Health Intelligence Adviser, to sit within the Evidence for Action function. We are responsible for identifying, synthesising and communicating the current evidence base for what works to improve population health and reduce health inequalities.  

Examples of our recent work include the following: 

  • Developing evidence tools to inform public mental health policy.
  • Reviewing the impact of welfare reform policies on population health within the United Kingdom.
  • Providing an evidence overview to inform the Scottish Government’s strategic assessment of projects proposed for ‘National Development’ status in the draft National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4).
  • Synthesising the evidence generated by the national evaluation programme for minimum unit pricing for alcohol legislation.
  • Developing a whole system knowledge into action approach within education settings.

The post holder will be required to develop and lead work to review and synthesise the current evidence base on the effectiveness of public health policy and programmes; and ensure that evidence is translated and disseminated for policy and practice audiences in a timely and accessible manner to maximise its use.  

The Candidate:
We are seeking people with excellent research and evidence skills (qualitative and/or quantitative), strong partnership and interpersonal skills and the ability to lead complex and often evolving projects.  The post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to a range of work within the team.  The specific areas of work that the post holder will work on will be agreed dependent on current demands and will be in line with national public health priorities.

Please note that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow from early 2024.

Currently hybrid working

Work pattern - Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week however PHS supports flexible working and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns.

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
