NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde international NMC registration programme
The NHSGGC international NMC registration programme provides an opportunity for internationally-trained nurses, who have previously obtained a recognised nursing qualification, to undertake the necessary training, preparation and examinations to apply for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). Once you have been successfully listed on the NMC Register you will automatically be offered a Registered Nurse position within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC).
The international NMC registration programme
Once you have been appointed to the international NMC registration programme, you will join a small cohort of colleagues who will be guided through the various stages to achieving NMC registration.
Qualification registration
As part of your application you must provide a copy of your qualification certificate and details of the education institution you studied your nursing qualification with to the NMC. The NMC will review and evaluate the suitability of your qualification and let you know if it meets the standards required to apply for registration.
Computer Based Test (CBT)
You will be required to sit a CBT to demonstrate your knowledge of numeracy, objectivity and nursing theory. The examination is 3 hours, and will be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre. The closest test centres are in Glasgow, Clydebank, Greenock, Stirling, and Ayr.
Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
The OSCE is a practical test which will examine your clinical and communication skills in a simulated environment. During this 3-hour examination you will visit 10 stations where your practical nursing skills will be reviewed. The OSCE is only provided by five test providers:
- Oxford Brookes University
- University of Northampton
- Ulster University
- Northumbria University
- Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
To help you prepare for your OSCE, NHSGGC will arrange for you to attend an OSCE preparation programme and have access to supporting materials. The OSCE preparation programme may vary and can range from a one-week ‘bootcamp’ style programme to a blended programme spanning an eight-week period. Please note, your OSCE examination and travel arrangements cannot be arranged until you have commenced your OSCE preparation programme.
If you fail your OSCE on your first attempt, you will be permitted to resist the examination. You can only resit the OSCE a maximum of three times as part of your application. You will need to wait at least 10 days between each sitting.
NMC Registration
Once the NMC have agreed your nursing qualification is suitable, you have passed the CBT, and you have passed the OSCE, it is time for you to apply for your NMC registration. In addition to the above evidence, you will be required to provide a health declaration, character reference, and proof of your English language.
NMC PIN
As soon as the NMC have decided on your suitability to be a practising nurse in the UK, you will be provided with an NMC PIN (Personal Identification Number), and you will be added to the NMC Register.
Registered Nurse
Once you appear on the NMC Register, you will progress and become a Registered Nurse within NHSGGC. Your salary will be revised and aligned to the Agenda for Change Band 5 payscale (currently £30,229 - £37,664 per annum, pro-rata if applicable).
Visa and immigration
If you are currently under some form of immigration control, and will require sponsorship to allow you to apply for a Skilled Worker visa or Health and Care Worker visa, you will be provided with a Certificate of Sponsorship during this process to allow you to amend your visa and work as a Band 5 Registered Nurse.
Employment during the international NMC registration programme
