Applications are welcome for a Consultant Haematologist post in NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Haematologist to support and expand the high quality services NHS Ayrshire & Arran provides. This is a replacement post. The successful candidate will complement the expertise of the 7 existing substantive consultants in our two main acute hospitals, providing a Haemato-Oncology service to the local population.

The department provides comprehensive Haemato-Oncology and laboratory services with the potential to develop sub-speciality interests. The successful applicant will have training and experience in Haematology, with an expertise in Haemato-Oncology, and would have the opportunity to develop in a preferred specialist area.

The Consultant team will work with excellent multidisciplinary teams of staff working in the department including a Speciality Doctor, trainees from the West of Scotland Rotation, a clinical teaching fellow and clinical development fellow, 2 Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, strong laboratory teams and a supportive and proactive operational management team.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran has a reputation for excellent, friendly staff who provide high quality care from University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr. Both are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range of emergency and elective services. The health board serves a population of over 388,000 across a diverse geographical area. We work in close collaboration with the West of Scotland Cancer Network and are represented both clinically and managerially on regional and national groups. The successful candidate will be supported and encouraged to develop within the role.

Following a review of regional services for delivery of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy across the West of Scotland, a programme is underway to renew the model of care, enhancing our tiered approach to SACT delivery in both acute hospitals and in community locations to support future models of care. National and regional oncology workforce modelling is also underway and Haemato-oncology is part of this work. NHS Ayrshire and Arran provides excellent training and team development opportunities.

The board has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Glasgow, Healthcare Improvement Scotland and NHS Education. The department is actively involved in clinical trials and a research interest would be strongly supported for a suitably qualified applicant. There is a modern and well supported education centre and full library facilities.

We have the advantage of both main hospitals sitting on a green field sites with open views to the countryside, free parking and excellent hospital catering. The location is perfect for visiting Arran, the Scottish Highlands and Islands and Lowlands of Galloway. Water based sports golf and mountain biking are popular pastimes. We are only 40 mins by road to Glasgow and 20 mins to Prestwick Airport. NHS Ayrshire and Arran serves a population of 388,000 with haematology and haemato-oncology specialities located at University Hospital Crosshouse (Kilmarnock) for inpatients, clinics and chemotherapy day unit, and Kyle Unit (clinics and chemotherapy day unit) on the University Hospital Ayr site.

This is a replacement post. The successful applicant will have a good grounding in general and malignant haematology and will contribute to inpatient, day unit, outpatient and laboratory haematology, including out-of-hours on call on a 1 in 8 basis.

Applicants must either be on the GMC’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining their CCST at the time of interview.

The post is intended as full-time (10PAs, 9 DCC, 1 SPA), any candidate who, for personal reasons, is unable to work whole-time is eligible to be considered for the post on a less than full-time contract.
