Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.  

Applications are invited for a Consultant Clinical Geneticist post; to join a team of 4 NHS Consultant Clinical Geneticists, 3 Academic Consultants and 8 Registered Genetic counsellors providing a comprehensive Genetic Service to the population of Lothian, Fife and Borders (approx. 1.2 million).
The post will be vacant on 1st June 2024 and is based in the SE Scotland Genetic Service, Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC) at the Western General Hospital.  The clinical service is currently co-located with the Regional Genetic laboratories and there are strong links with regular multidisciplinary team meetings. The laboratories have full UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accreditation.

Genetic Services in Scotland are delivered via 4 Regional Genetic Centres; Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The 4 genetic laboratories operate as a Nationally funded network delivering a high quality efficient diagnostic service and there are opportunities for genetic clinicians to work closely on service developments and National strategy. The 4 Clinical Genetic departments are highly collaborative and linked through informal networks, including the Clinical Genetic Forum and the Scottish Cancer Genetic Group. The SE Scotland Genetic Service is co-located with a world class research institute, the Institute of Genomics and Cancer which has resulted in many fruitful collaborations.

The successful applicant will have a CCT in Clinical Genetics or be within 6 months at interview date of achieving this and will be expected to have a special interest in Paediatric Genetics and Dysmorphology. Other areas of special interest may be accommodated by negotiation.

There will be discussion with the successful applicant as to how the job plan will be delivered. The indicative Job Plan includes 9 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care, plus 1 Supporting Professional Activities. In addition, there is also the opportunity to competitively apply for 1 to 2 supernumerary research sessions through the Chief Scientist Office.
