The Post:

An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Biomedical scientist 1 in the busy Blood Bank Department at Aberdeen and North East Scotland Blood Transfusion centre.

As Part of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) the Aberdeen centre covers the transfusion needs of the North East of Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland islands and Dr Gray’s hospital, Elgin.

The blood bank laboratory processes approx. 50,000 patient blood samples and issues approx. 100,000 blood components per year. The Laboratory also provides antenatal and serological reference testing for the region

The laboratory uses Grifols gel technology for blood group and antibody screening, utilising the Grifols Erytra blood grouping analyser and eTraceline for the LIMS system.

The Candidate:

Candidates must have HCPC registration in Biomedical science or a qualification acceptable for HCPC registration.

Ideally, candidates will have previous experience working in a laboratory environment and previous blood transfusion experience is desirable, although not essential as full training will be given.

Candidates should be computer literate with good attention to detail and demonstrate good communication skills. They must also be able to work unsupervised as well as part of a team.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who have lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.

Location and Working Pattern:

This post is based in the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Blood transfusion centre

A 24/7 Shift rota is in operation and the successful candidate would be expected to participate in this rota following training.

Enhanced payments and rest days are provided for shift working.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NSS.
