Consultants in Anaesthesia (3 posts) - University Hospital Wishaw

Specialist interests: Obstetric Anaesthesia, Preoperative assessment and Perioperative medicine.

University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) is looking to employ 3 enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Anaesthetists to join our existing team.

These 3 posts will be:

Post 1: Consultant Anaesthetist with specialist interest in obstetric anaesthesia

Post 2: Consultant Anaesthetist with a specialist interest in obstetric anaesthesia, pre-operative assessment and perioperative medicine

Post 3: Consultant General Anaesthetist with a specialist interest in pre-operative assessment and perioperative medicine.

The Anaesthetics Department is part of the Surgical & Critical Care Directorate, which provides services within a 12 theatre main operating suite inclusive of 2 maternity theatres.

UHW houses NHS Lanarkshire’s (NHSL) regional maternity unit and the anaesthetic department provides 24/7 resident cover providing all aspects of obstetric anaesthesia. Posts 1 and 2 are advertised to add to our existing complement of consultant obstetric anaesthetists and to facilitate the formation of our new non-resident consultant obstetric anaesthesia on call rota.

Our maternity unit has approx. 5000 deliveries per year. More details are provided in the accompanying job pack.

Our pre-operative assessment service is led by a dynamic team of interested Consultants and dedicated and skilled nursing staff. We are in the process of integrating a state of the art digital preassessment service into working practice. The successful applicants (posts 2 and 3) will join this existing team. The successful applicant for post 3 will contribute to our CEPOD/trauma on call rota. Again further details are provided within the job pack.

UHW hosts NHSL trauma unit providing surgical and anaesthetic services for all adult and paediatric trauma patients requiring surgery within NHSL. Ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia is performed for the majority of our trauma patients. We are also a regional trauma centre, integrated within the Scottish Trauma Network.

The NHS Lanarkshire orthopaedic upper limb service is based in UHW.

We have well developed acute and chronic pain services. Our acute pain service team is consultant led and includes two specialist nurses. An acute pain round is performed daily, promoting safe pain management and functional recovery following surgery.

We have a 12 bedded Adult Critical Care Unit admitting both Level 2 and Level 3 patients.  On site there is also a general surgical Level 1 area, a trauma level 1 area and a 12 bedded medical HDU.

University Hospital Wishaw is a District General Hospital allowing a varied practice and in addition to above hosts upper and lower general surgery, gynaecology, paediatric services with some paediatric surgery and trauma and orthopaedic services.

Situated in West Central Scotland, University Hospital Wishaw is readily accessed from a wide area. Geographically it sits between Glasgow and Edinburgh allowing ready access to and commuting from both.

The jobs are offered as a full-time posts on a 10 PA basis (including up to 2 non-DCC) but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. If full-time, up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional clinical activity.
