Spotlight on Acute Medicine of the Elderly at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Hospital

The Acute Medicine of the Elderly department is located within the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and is a busy and exciting department serving thousands of people each year from all around Edinburgh, West Lothian, East Lothian, Midlothian and beyond!

We have the following wards:

  • Ward 101 has 22 beds
  • Ward 201 has 22 beds
  • Ward 202 has 36 beds

Looking after elderly patients is often a complex task as they often have a variety of serious medical issues that require interventions such as

  • Assessing vital signs
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals (MDT) to implement treatment plans Monitoring patients’ conditions and assessing their vital signs
  • Conducting regular screenings and routine check-up on patients
  • Assessing the cognitive skills and mental status of their patient
  • Develop treatment plans and administer medications
  • Educate patients on coping skills to handle age-related conditions
  • Provide treatment for chronic conditions most likely to affect the elderly (e.g., heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease)
  • Assist with and train patients on daily living activities, such as hygiene, toileting, and medication management

We are looking for nurses that:

  • Have knowledge of the aging process and disease progression
  • Have the ability to recognise verbal and nonverbal
  • Are compassionate, patient and empathetic
  • Believe in a patient centred approached to care Have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have the ability to remain calm and help others in a crisis Have that attention to detail and organisation
  • Problem solving and leadership skills

  • Are commitment to patient advocacy and ethical practice
