The Aberdeen Centre for Reproductive Medicine (Aberdeen Fertility Centre) provides a broad range of fertility treatments and is internationally recognised for its research. The centre is licenced by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and is certified to ISO 15189:2012 and ISO 9001:2015. The centre has been providing patients in Grampian, Highland, Orkney and Shetland with a full range of fertility services for over 35 years.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Science Practitioner in Andrology to join our outstanding team based in the Maternity Hospital at Foresterhill. This role would involve you working as part of a scientific laboratory team to contribute to the strategic direction of the andrology laboratories at Aberdeen Fertility Centre. What makes this role even more exciting is the prospect of playing a key part in the relocation of our unit in 2024 to its purpose-built new home in the Baird Family Hospital and ANCHOR Centre.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated person with excellent interpersonal skills, a team player, someone who can work independently and has good attention to detail to join our laboratory team in Aberdeen. As a healthcare practitioner, you will be expected to contribute to provide a high standard of IVF service at the Aberdeen Fertility Centre.
The role requires the Andrologist to:
- Provide a high standard of andrology service within AFC for the treatment of patients undergoing fertility treatment ensuring safe and responsible handling and identification of gametes in accordance to the HFEA code of practice. This service includes the creation and maintenance of frozen gamete banks.
- The post holder will work within the Andrology Laboratory providing diagnostic services and cryostorage of semen samples on a daily basis. The post holder will become competent in a full range of specialised diagnostic and clinical andrology procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements.
- To assist in preparation for internal and external audits and inspections and provide service improvement.
- Participate in internal quality control and external quality assurance to maintain the integrity of the service.
- To maintain accurate confidential laboratory and patient records including entering data into specialist databases.
- Communicate daily with patients conveying complicated information regarding their semen analysis and semen samples in storage in an easily understood format.
- Maintain and enhance knowledge and experience through Association of Reproductive Scientists and Clinical Scientists (ARCS) continuous professional development (CPD) scheme approved by the Health and Care Professions Council
- Support the planning of the relocation of the unit to the Baird Family Hospital in 2024.
- To assist the Laboratory manager in developing laboratory policies and regularly reviewing standard operating procedures to improve the service.
- To support appropriate equipment validation is undertaken and all daily and monthly monitoring of critical equipment is undertaken.
- To partake in the training of junior embryologists using scientific knowledge and expertise gained during clinical laboratory experience.
- Competence in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is essential and familiarity with proprietary systems QPulse and Datix is desirable.
