Post:               Consultant in Early Intervention Psychosis

Department:   Early Intervention Psychosis Service Esteem

Location:        Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Applications are invited for a 1 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist for the Early Intervention Psychosis Service (Esteem) within Glasgow.  The post holder will be delivering services within Glasgow with a mixture of deprived inner city areas and affluent suburbs although this would be subject to service review. Inpatients are currently admitted to Leverndale, Stobhill or Gartneval Hospitals.

The ESTEEM consultant works closely with the multi-disciplinary team and sector Community Mental Health Teams, Social Work and Voluntary Organisations to provide a comprehensive service, including inpatient and outpatient treatment.  They will participate in the on-call rota for South or North Glasgow and cover for colleagues during absences in line with arrangements set out in national Terms & Conditions.  It is expected that the successful applicant would be an Approved Medical Practitioner in terms of the Mental Health (Care & Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003 by the time of appointment.

Esteem is a well-established model in Glasgow.  It targets all new presentation of psychotic illness and provides continued input for the first 2 years.  The aim is to provide maximum functional recovery during this period and improve longer-term outcomes.  It is expected that all team members will work closely with carers and provide psychosocial interventions where appropriate. The service model is based on early intervention philosophy and the Glasgow Integrated Care Pathway for Psychosis.  The aims are to minimise the duration of untreated psychosis, promote recovery and functional outcome and provide support to families.  It is expected that there will be a 15:1 caseload for key workers and that members of staff provide an active occupational therapy programme and psychosocial interventions, including family work and cognitive behavioural therapy.
