Clinical Microbiology (Bacteriology)

Biomedical Scientist (Band 5)

HOURS: 37.5 hrs/week

CONTRACT DURATION: Fixed term – 12 months

Applications are invited from motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking individuals wishing to pursue a career in Biomedical Science. Ideally, candidates will be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. However, candidates who have an appropriate IBMS Accredited BSc (hons) Biomedical Science degree or similar to allow registration with the HCPC will be considered. For applicants not yet registered with the HCPC, these candidates, if successful, will be required to complete their Competency Portfolio and the schedule of in-house training provided within the agreed time scale prior to progression to full Band 5. In this circumstance, the salary will be paid in line with Annex 21 of the A4C Terms & Conditions.

Successful candidates will join our large team who perform a range of routine and specialist procedures in Microbiology producing results that aid in the diagnosis of disease and the treatment of patients. Microbiology within NHS Lothian is a very innovative laboratory, utilising a range of automation including a BD Kiestra Total Lab Automation system; one of their largest worldwide and only Scottish installation.

The post is based in the Bacteriology Laboratory at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh; however candidates may be expected to rotate to Bacteriology at St. John’s Hospital as part of their training.  

Participation in the 24/7 working system will be expected as training progresses.

*Please note this is a Trainee post, therefore Annex 21 applies*

For trainees covered by Annex 21 where the period of training lasts for between one and four years, pay will be as follows:

  • up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
  • more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate of the qualified;
  • more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
  • more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.
