Entry Criteria for a Specialty Doctor: 

  1. A doctor appointed to this grade:
  • shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC);

And

  • shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme or specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT);

Or

  • shall have equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas.

Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term (2 years), full time (40 hours per week) post based in the Western General Hospital.

The post-holder will triage and see referrals from all areas in the hospital with rapid access to consultant supervision.   Common presentations include:

1.   Acute and chronic organic psychiatric syndromes.

2.   Co-morbid physical and psychiatric disorders.

3.   Substance misuse.

4.   Risk assessment- post parasuicide/ suicidal ideation etc. 

5.  Second opinion of capacity to take treatment or discharge decisions, including use of Incapacity legislation.

6.   Use of the mental health act in a General Hospital- Section 22 approval should be in place or obtained as soon as training available.

7.   Functional disorders.

Outpatient work including patients from GI, Diabetes or Infectious Diseases Department could be arranged  at suitable times.    

There are weekly hospital Grand Rounds, regular departmental tutorials and access to IT services and WGH Medical Library.
