The Role

The post holder works as part of a team of Dental Nurses and provides full surgery and administrative support to the consultant led Orthodontic and OMFS Service that deliver specialist dental treatment for patients referred for treatment by dental practitioners and other healthcare professionals. On occasions the post holder will be expected to work in clinics operated by the Public Dental Service. The post holders is expected to work in any clinic in Lanarkshire, with any clinician, with patients undergoing a wide variety of treatments (examinations and assessments, restorations, extractions, surgical procedures,  prosthodontic treatment, preventive treatments, x-rays, orthodontic treatment, treatment under local anaesthetic and /or sedation (oral, inhalation and intravenous).


The post holder will be required to carry out all the duties normally expected of a Qualified Dental Nurse in terms of chairside clinical and administrative assistance plus specialised training and knowledge particularly in orthodontic treatments, techniques and materials.


The post holder will support the clinician, patients and their carers and staff undergoing training. The post holder will also provide a full range of administrative duties to support the effective and efficient delivery of dental care for patients. This includes organizing appointments, liaising with the referring dentists, checking patient’s details, providing advice, taking work to and from the dental lab, providing full chairside and surgery support and recording activity on computerised systems.

What we'll need you to bring

  • Hold a nationally recognised (NEB) dental nurse qualification
  • Certificate in Orthodontics for Dental Nurses
  • Be on the GDC’s register for Dental Nurses
  • Have a level of specialist theoretical knowledge and practical skills suitable for working with a variety of clinicians and for responding to any situation that develops including emergencies
  • Knowledge of dental procedures, new techniques and up to date knowledge about materials
  • Aware of patient confidentiality, child protection issues, Disability Discrimination Act and Adults with Incapacity Act
  • Able to communicate well at all levels – good reporting skills verbal and written
  • Ability when necessary to use initiative, intuition and knowhow in imaginative and creative ways to overcome problems and stimulate change
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work
  • Car driver with a full, valid UK/EU/EEA licence and access to a car


It would be great if you also have

  • Experience of working in a multi disciplinary environment, experience of working as a dental nurse in more than one branch of dentistry would be advantageous
  • The post holder’s  experience will ensure they have a level of understanding of and can anticipate the support the dentist and the patient needs so that treatment
  • Competent dental nurse – knowledge of new techniques in dental nursing and materials
  • A sympathetic, patient approach and the ability to form congenial working relationships  - good interpersonal skills


Contract type

Fixed Term or Secondment for 12 months

30 hours

Please note: This is a part time post and the salary for this position will be pro-rata.

Please note: This is a fixed term post for 12 months. Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a secondment. The employee MUST already have written agreement from their line manager to be released on a secondment before applying for the post. 


Location and Working Pattern

This role will be based in Public Dental Services, University Hospital Hairmyres.

The working pattern for this role is:  Monday- Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm.  Flexibility on working days can be discussed at interview.
