One major recommendation being that of developing a continuity of carer model. As well as our Birth@home team, we are also pleased to share NHS Fife had the first Continuity of Carer model for high risk women in Scotland. We have our Bethune team who is named after a local midwife from the 1800’s. They provide all care to over 170 women per year who have a BMI of 40 or greater at booking. The team is made up completely of volunteers who applied to join the team. They work a combined model of caseload and team.

NHS Fife’s appreciation and nurture of Midwife led care is longstanding. Our alongside unit opened its doors in 1993 and has gone from strength to strength. Being revolutionary for its time, it has continued to be progressive and has been recognised nationally for the work in VBAC water birth. We aim to remain at the forefront of midwife led care and have more recently been a key contributor in the development of the MUSA Tool (Midwifery Unit Standards Assessment Tool) in conjunction with the University of London. Where the aim, is to have European Midwife Led Unit standards for all.
We have a dedicated ELLUSCS team as well as a dedicated Induction of labour Suite. This if nothing else should let you know how much NHS Fife values its staff.
